RESEARCH ARTICLE TITLE:
Bogad, Lesley - BANTER FOR BREAKFAST -YOUTH AND POWER RESISTANCE IN A (UN) REGULATED SPACE -
While reading this very interesting and realistic article my observation and understanding has mainly focus on qualitative method. My perspective was focus on how spaces can change according to how the “Authority of Coolness and Maleness" impacted this space.
“Per this article, coolness looks very different for young women than it does for young men."
- - "The markers of coolness for boys often rely upon particular codes of masculinity” This space - is a place where feminist politics and radical progressive thought are usually visible in the weekly conversation and valued. However. (male) coolness at Banter for Breakfast does invoke the authority of male privilege and the norms of hegemonic masculinity-through aloofness, tales of alcohol use and talk of sexual exploit-which in turn work to silence those who are measured against it."
- E.g.: Twin boys would be dominant to change the topic of other students who may had already started a topic. This would shifted the ethos in the room which was mostly dominated by girls suddenly became a make space.
- This lead us to see the reality how popularity can sometimes dominant the topic of a group or conversation if other parties do not ground their thoughts or opinions as this is happening.
Based on this article explanation: “these spaces takes up complexities rather than flattening them in the context of developmental stages, it is a place that opens dialogue between young people, helps them bridge the often divided pieces of their lives and serves as a valuable alternative space for teens to engage.”
Thus the mission state seems to be an inclusive very diverse group of students from my reading and the author explanation it sounds the observed audience were mainly white middle class and not a diverse group as it was persuaded to be... However, to learned this mission statement was created to be inclusive of all genders, race and groups was an admirable doing of these students.
My observation of this article help me determined the method used was the qualitative method, due to its components explained: interviews, observations, the gathering of individual feedbacks.
truly love and enjoy the history of this article, time frame created and how the world has evolved since 1997... Almost, two decades after. Great analogy explained across the various observations.
In today's society due to this type of research and observations various organizations have been able to evolved and provide suitable spaces to allow our youth to continue their milestone development for freedom of speech. Lets continue to work together and allow their voices to be heard as this will allow us "adults" to understand our youth better and work in a more collaborative manner rather than displaying the general methodology of adultism.
