Blog 5 - Rhode Island Behavioral Health System of Care Plan for Children's and Youth

HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN RI

RI Behavioral Health System of Care Plan for Children and Youth

System of Care Approach

This assignment its very dear and close to me, I am passionate about advocating and witnessing new plans develop from higher hierarchy who promise and promise and finally see the reality of assisting the community we live in.  My passion comes from my life and work experience.  I mainly serve our community a population with high needs from health, education, housing, and many more, a community that sometimes is forgotten and dominated by politics and riches...

Let's begin... In the initial stage of the reading I was very curious to learn about the development of this plan given I was invited as a participant during the preliminary process of the EOHHS implementation sessions.  These meetings included some of the partners described (e,g.: ...) however, I notice a lack of participation and not a fully diverse population as described.  Allow me to explain; for one it was lacking the inclusion of real families, community advocates and others.  Off course the excuse was "this is a starting point" which I honestly appreciated their response.

Here's a hyperlink of the System Care Approach plan assigned to be read. I include this link as a reference of the following: below you will find a copy of a paragraph within this proposed plan that indicates it is a "crafted model" which still needs works, and the title of parties invited to partake within the development of this statewide plan who are also described as a team approach.

"Throughout implementation and as we secure additional funding opportunities, EOHHS and our partners will routinely evaluate the plan components. Therefore, this is a working document that will change. It is crafted through the lens of creating a more equitable and sufficient behavioral health system for all Rhode Island children, youth, and families, driven by community voice, choice, and using a racial equity lens. Our state planning team and our community partners – families, providers of services, and advocates".

My perspective after reading this plan was - hey what happen to qualitative, graphs, proposals, and data they are referring too, nevertheless the inclusion of all participants and descriptive information indicated... Ohhhh boy... I fell deceived and honestly very disappointed to read and see the lack of details.  However, after doing some digging, researching and connecting with folks I realized this was not the final graph, so WOLLAAAA I received a copy of the full completed document with the inclusion of resources, data, videos and conclusive information that brought happiness to learn its context but know that there's much work to continue.  Here's the full completed plan: Rhode Island Behavioral Health System of Care Plan for Children and Youth ( https://bit.ly/3NkO3Df )

This help me alleviate some of the anxiety I had since I did not have an opportunity to see the final version until now.   I know LOTS and LOTS of work still pending but the state has follow with what it promised and generated a plan that would provide services to ALL mainly focus our underserved population including mental health and other branches of needs our community is currently lacking. I've also learned many diverse groups of professionals, non-professional(families) and others were indeed part of finalizing this statewide plan.

It brings me joy to learn - I live in the smallest state of the greatest country known as United States, this proves that we as a state accomplished what it promised, although it takes time but what doesn't.

Hopefully, in the right path and will continue...

Blog #6 - Designing Qualitative Data (J. Maxwell)

 The Value of Qualitative Data

Truly enjoy the the valuable inside Maxwell elaborated in this reading.  He provided directions on how quantitative data collection work and lots inside navigation.  Please see the chart above as during the reading I found ALL these components that would allow you to collect powerful and adequate models of design follow by merging them together in a reporting system that would analyzed a proper system to obtain successful functioning and steps of planning.

The image displayed - Figure 7.2  Contextual Factors Influencing a Research Design

- Helps identify part of the research as it explains and can assist as a useful one for the reasons explained in the article which are: 1) Explicitly identifies as a key and issues are less likely to be ignore. 2) Emphasizes the nature and multiplies the connection of all components3) Model of study proposal that communicates the connections amongst all.

What attracted the most attention was the Research Questions: What Do You Want to Understand?  This was one of many yet the one that attracted my attention the most.  Why? This explains and explicitly indicates the preliminary process before you even begin your project/research and all that is relevant to the understanding of the study data that you will be collecting and analyzing.  It also allows you to create a flow sheet that would serve as a preliminary guiding point and will assist as a tool to develop initial questions of the frame you you are generating to further assist on developing more specific questions that influence the decisions of some / if not all of the methods.

In conclusion, the methods process brought me back to the pizza menu which sound very similar to how we may collect and create a list of guiding points to carry a task however the analytical design is often conceptually from its design, which means from the data actually collected as Coffey & Atkinson, 1996 indicated "I treat analysis as a part of desing and as something that must itself be designed.  Basic principles of qualitative research is that: data analysis should be conducted simultaneously w/data collection."

These steps would allow us to test your emerging conclusions.

Blog #4 - CAPSTONE Project Overview

What does it means to think about my CAPSTONE Project???

As I navigate through the various amazing CAPSTONE Projects and many different perspectives of folks.   Having an opportunity of being able to have accessibility to others presentation helps me round my thoughts in the direction of research, which allows me to focus on "what is the big picture of my own capstone?". Uhhhmmm, it brings me back to the first blog! Should I center my attention to the first 21 questions? These individual items may allow me a broader design of my capstone project? Would this avenue allow me to eliminate some of the irrelevant and/or relevant questions I had in the preliminary stage of the project and allow me to understand the reasons I decided to become part of the YDEV program.

THANK YOU - GRACIAS - Professor Lesley, for allowing the class to review all the remarkable presentations other folks have been able to designed and present in the previous cohort.  They all capture my attention, made me wonder and re-think where do I see myself after graduate.

Blog #3 - Pizza Research Menu

Research Project - Using "The Pizza" Method

RESEARCH ARTICLE TITLE:

Bogad, Lesley - BANTER FOR BREAKFAST -YOUTH AND POWER RESISTANCE IN A (UN) REGULATED SPACE -

While reading this very interesting and realistic article my observation and understanding has mainly focus on qualitative method. My perspective was focus on how spaces can change according to how the “Authority of Coolness and Maleness" impacted this space.

“Per this article, coolness looks very different for young women than it does for young men."

  • - "The markers of coolness for boys often rely upon particular codes of masculinity” This space - is a place where feminist politics and radical progressive thought are usually visible in the weekly conversation and valued.     However. (male) coolness at Banter for Breakfast does invoke the authority of male privilege and the norms of hegemonic masculinity-through aloofness, tales of alcohol use and talk of sexual exploit-which in turn work to silence those who are measured against it."

    • E.g.: Twin boys would be dominant to change the topic of other students who may had already started a topic.  This would shifted the ethos in the room which was mostly dominated by girls suddenly became a make space.
  • This lead us to see the reality how popularity can sometimes dominant the topic of a group or conversation if other parties do not ground their thoughts or opinions as this is happening.

Based on this article explanation: “these spaces takes up complexities rather than flattening them in the context of developmental stages, it is a place that opens dialogue between young people, helps them bridge the often divided pieces of their lives and serves as a valuable alternative space for teens to engage.”

Thus the mission state seems to be an inclusive very diverse group of students from my reading and the author explanation it sounds the observed audience were mainly white middle class and not a diverse group as it was persuaded to be... However, to learned this mission statement was created to be inclusive of all genders, race and groups was an admirable doing of these students.

My observation of this article help me determined the method used was the qualitative method, due to its components explained: interviews, observations, the gathering of individual feedbacks.

truly love and enjoy the history of this article, time frame created and how the world has evolved since 1997... Almost, two decades after. Great analogy explained across the various observations.

In today's society due to this type of research and observations various organizations have been able to evolved and provide suitable spaces to allow our youth to continue their milestone development for freedom of speech. Lets continue to work together and allow their voices to be heard as this will allow us "adults" to understand our youth better and work in a more collaborative manner rather than displaying the general methodology of adultism.
